Reading your blogs took me back to my earliest memory of singing hymns.

We all looked forward to the summer because we had one week when we would attend Vacation Bible School, and it was a big dang deal!

My favorite song  when I was young was "Footsteps of Jesus."  We were told that if we sang it VERY VERY loud, that the pastor would hear it and come running thru the door as it was HIS favorite song.  After about the third verse would be SCREAMING this song and running thru the door clapping his hands and singing was our gentleand  kind  Pastor Sigrest!  We were thrilled!

Footsteps of Jesus

 Sweetly, Lord, have we heard Thee calling,
“Come, follow Me !” ,
And we see where Thy footprints falling,
Lead us to Thee.

Footprints of Jesus,
That make the pathway glow;
We will follow the steps of Jesus,
Where’er they go.

Tho they lead o’er the cold, dark mountains,
Seeking His sheep,
Or along by Siloam’s fountains,
Helping the weak.

If they lead thro’ the temple holy,
Preaching the Word,
Or in homes of the poor and lowly,
Serving the Lord

Then at last, when on high He sees us,
Our journey done,
We will rest where the steps of Jesus,
End at His throne.

Our next one was of course, "Bringing in the Sheaves".  I had no idea what a sheave was, I think I thought it was a group of sheep.

It it amazing though in the time of sadness or loneliness how these words would enter our head and give us hope and comfort.

Even though my parent's didn't attend church, they made sure I was there EVERY Sunday and I continued until I was out of high school.

Thanks for the childhood reminder girls ! <3

Bringing in the Sheaves

Sowing in the morning, sowing seeds of kindness,
Sowing in the noontide and the dewy eve;
Waiting for the harvest, and the time of reaping,
We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves.

Bringing in the sheaves
Bringing in the sheaves
We shall come rejoicing
Bringing in the sheaves

Bringing in the sheaves
Bringing in the sheaves
We shall come rejoicing
Bringing in the sheaves

Sowing in the sunshine, sowing in the shadows,
Fearing neither clouds nor winter’s chilling breeze;
By and by the harvest, and the labor ended,
We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves

Going forth with weeping, sowing for the Master,
Tho’ the loss sustained our spirit often grieves;
When our weeping’s over, He will bid us welcome,
We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves.

    You can join Jenn and Mary as an official selector of Blogster hymns. Add the other Cindy (queenteamum) too. This club is getting larger by the minute! One of my remembered and favorite choruses: Jesus Loves the Little Children. "...Red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in His sight..."

    Now when I think about the Jesus Loves the Little Children song... I sometimes have wondered if it is "politcally correct" with the red, yellow, black and white part. Probably not... but I still have fond memories of that song. Not just VBS, but Sunday School, too.[SMILE][SMILE]

    My most memorable were "Jesus Loves Me, In the Garden, Old Rugged Cross, and Amazing, Grace."

    My son's paternal grandfather (recently deceased) loved In the Garden, and his fraternal grandpa (my dad) loves Old Rugged Cross.

    I love the River picture and the photo of the school kiddies ~ the little boy in the front 'really' wants to see, whats going on [HEART] Reading the words of the 'Bringing in the sheeves', brought 'mental images' of the various 'westerns', I've watched. I find it 'unusual', to hear/read it in the present day. (This is not, meant as a 'critiscism', merely that 'I', only associate it with the 'movies', as this is 'the first' time, I have ever conversed, with, the people, of the USA !!! ). Since I have been with Blogster, I have been
    amazed, at the friendliness, I have been shown here. I've mentioned this to several people. Sorry, I digress (I have a habit of doing that !!! ) This is a very, thought provoking, post, well done Cindy [THUMBUP] [HEART]

    When I was growing up, we had Baptist neighbors. They always invited us to join them at their church's VBS. It was really loads of fun.

    well i never went to VBS, didn't become a christian until much later in life. do you think they would let me go now? One time my stepdaughters girl scout troop went to visit a homeless shelter. They took cookies and punch and presents for the families. We were blessed to hear two little brothers sing Jesus Loves Me. There wasn't a dry eye in the house. [HEART]

    Ahhhh, VBS in the summer! Thanks for a trip down memory lane. The three main churches in my home town were just a few blocks from each other. They always staggered their VBS so all the kids in the neighborhood could attend each one! We were all Baptist, Methodist and Presbyterians for a week at a time! Mmmmmmm Enjoying the thought of Kool-Aid & Cookies and memorizing Bible verses.[KISS][HEART]

    [HEART] It just warms the heart. There is just something about having kool-aid and cookies at VBS that made it taste even better.[HEART][THUMBUP]

    My parents were very active with the church. Us children had to go to what they called "School of Faith" every Thursday evening. We had Bible studies, then had dinner and back to the studies. Faithfully every Sunday was Sunday School. I do remember attending Vacation Bible School once.

    Wow... it seems that there are quite a few of us blogsters that have attended VBS as children. Yes, those were special memories. Not only songs and Bible lessons, but memorizing scriptures and getting to do a craft project. I still have a ceramic plaque with a little praying girl on it that I painted. Really bad paint job.... but still special to me.[SMILE][SMILE][HEART]

    I still remember my Sunday School teacher....Mrs. Jimmy Longmire....who gave each of us our very own big person's bible when we could recite all of the books of the bible! Vacation Bible School....happy, happy times. [THUMBUP][HEART][HEART]

    Personally, I was never one to go to bible schools, but we did go to church. Pams daughter Kayla loves going to Virginia for a couple months every summer because she gets to go to not one, but two week long bible camps. [THUMBUP] [HEART]

    I still have a wood plaque that I made in VBS when I was in short pants. It is a large cross on a hill with the sun coming up. I made it with woodburning tools and colored it, then coated it with varnish. It is on my wall near this computer. My very first creative effort. (Tear)
