Making Big $$ ... Selling Turtles?

That's right!!    Turtle farming!!   ( or is it turtle ranching??)

I ran into an old friend today when I was downstairs grabbing a coke and some Nabs @ the snack bar.  She was visiting a friend in the main hospital who had just had a baby.

She and her husband have always planted soybeans and cotton, had some pond raised catfish they sold......they followed in the footsteps of their parents.  Got to go live in the "big house," and everything else that goes with "plantation farming."

I asked how the weather had affected their "crops" this year. That's when I found out about "turtle farming."  She told me they raise(?)  turtles, sell them and off to China they go~ As PETS! ~ "it's the only pet they are allowed to have in China, and every kid wants one."  ( I need to verify that as I have no idea if that is the gospel truth or not)

She went on to tell me there was a good bit of $$ to be made in "turtle farming" and that several others in their area were also raising and selling the little fellows.  I know it is illegal to sale small turtles here in  the states, or at least I THOUGHT  it was illegal.

Their biggest problem?  Raccoons.  She said they have put up  electric fences to try and keep Rocky & his friends out, but they managed to get in and eat the turtle eggs before they can put them in an incubator.  ( An incubator for turtle eggs???)

Obviously they are doing very well at this ... the diamond on ONE ear was bigger than any ring I ever OWNED.

Who would have thought it?

Aren't turtles related to slugs? What's a turtle phobia called?[WINK]
  • MentalHealthRN said 2 years ago

Cindy, about 8 yrs ago, I worked for a chemical engineer who had a side business as a vet for unusual and exotic pets, i.e., reptiles. He brought in a 2-headed tortoise and snake with a tumor in its eye... both of which repulsed me.[HUH] But he told me there was HUGE money in it b/c people love exotic pets. Only concern was: what to do when they were adult and oversized? He did say baby turles were illegal and that you could easily get salmonella from them - main reason. When Justin was 4 y/o, he and his best friend Jessica, received baby turtles (before they were illegal), but we ended up letting them loose at the Huntington Gardens b/c they had outgrown their aquarium. Like goldfish, the bigger the tank, the bigger they grow.

Aren't turtles a lot like frogs and salamanders, Cindy? [THUMBUP]
  • november said 2 years ago
I'll answer for Cindy b/c she's busy tending to all her beloved Blogbuds, horses, cats, Stano, and others in her menagerie. If it lives on both land and in water, it's amphibious. The shell puts it in another category than the frog or salamander. I also don't think it's related to slugs. Someone else know?[WINK]

I just want to raise puppies (or rather I want the wife to raise puppies) so I can play with them. Had a tortise once for about 12 years, but she wasn't much of a playtime companion, and slept all winter in the hall closet. I'll take a golden retriever pup anytime.
