An odd request I know, but hear me out.
About 2 months ago, the windows in my car would not go down and the top would not go down. I smelled a funny burning smell. Opened the hood, searched, could not find anything. It did smell electrical. I found some leaves in on the engine and thought, well maybe that's it.
I went and bought some fuses and replaced the fuse this morning. The windows went down, the top went down. GREAT.
I cranked up the car and SMOKE started coming out of the center console.
FIRE!
I ran in the house, got the fire extinquisher and came back to the car. When I turned off the engine, the smoke ( white) stopped. I cranked it again and and the white smoke and burning smell starts again.
Well, me being me, I proceed to take it apart. I pulled out the console, and found this. I started the car, the smoke came from the wires.
I turned it off, picked it up and saw what looked like a relay switch or wire harness that had about 8+ different color wires going in. A penny was lying next to the wire. Maybe that has nothing to do with it, maybe it does.
I can fix this if I can find the part! It controls the windows, top and who knows what else. It has to be some kind of reciever because the wires go in on top and it just sits under there, it doesn't connect to anything else.
On the black box it say-- AMP 1A28736-1 under that is says BMW 137-8118.
No one in town ( autozone etc.) has this part. I called a parts place online, talked with a guy from India... gave him the numbers. He said they didn't have the part.
How much sense does that make, I read the number to him. I said, " 1996 BMW 328i convertible"--he said he could not find the part. I told him, " ALL the wires come to it and it sits alone under the console. He had no clue. I am giving this a shot in the dark here, only because, amazingly, blogsters have been able to find things no one else can find.
If you are a car buff and reading this and are bored and would like to help, I will be in your debt. I will come to your house and give you a foot rub.... or maybe just a HUGE "Thank You"--- Cindy

aw girlfriend, I was trying to get some of the males to help here, but it would be great if one of the "females blogster" found it.[WINK] Now I can find almost anything, but even this has created more of a challenge than I realized... obviously repairing it is a piece of cake. ( I studied it carefully)... no wonder the dealerships want to charge so much, they are the only ones that can find the parts.[ROLLEYES][HEART]

What I would suggest is going to a Pull-aPart place. In your phone book look under salvage yards, ect. They have hundred of cars of all makes that have been in accidents and such. You can get just about any part for any car through these types of places and usually dirt cheap!!! I have fixed many a car for just a few bucks where as a garage would charge hundreds!!
