WOW! That would have been awful! I am glad my only foe is College Algebra! Now I won't even look at that the same! I though a 1 hour final was bad I'd go crazy in a 5 hour one!

My dad "only had an eighth grade" education, but he could work "arithmetic" problems that I could still not work when I graduated from collete.  From him I got my "smarts" that stand me in good stead yet today!  By the way, I would have to do some major reviewing to pass that test!

I will use a very handy excuse for not being able to handle the history portion....  I had so much more history to learn than those people did back then! lol  (I know, it's a bad excuse!)

Basic knowledge...understanding basic facts and useage, and knowing how to apply the knowledge for "survival" in life and in your trade was what education was all about.  Now, survival is measured more by competition, so the basics have gone out the window.  In other words, you don't have to know WHAT you are doing, just know HOW to do it!  It doesn't matter if you know WHY something works, just know HOW to make it work!  Nobody CARES if you know that's a noun, just use the language any way it works best for you!)

Today, with a college degree, I would flunk that!

One thing about the educational system in the late 1800s was that often only the well-to-do families could send their children to schools.  Country schools covered the basics and usually by the age of 12 children dropped out of their schools to help with family farms and businesses.  High school and college grades were more common among affluent families.  I see a lot of the questions focus on farming in the mathematics section.  Interesting to see how the questions are formed -- no multiple choice answers! ;) All essay or fill-in-the-blank method.  Scary! I sure would have flunked but I am sure if I studied these subjects and had the information fresh in my mind, I would pass the test.  But even with my college degree, I would have flunked it for sure!
